Love Live Special

In honor of their final live this week, I pushed up the Love Live episode.

Part 16: The Idolm@ster OVA

The beginning of the still going franchise. The Im@s franchise will be tackled in several episodes, so this is a short history with the OVA. This way I don’t need to reapeat too much in later Idolm@ster episodes and can focus on things I haven’t covered yet, like the live show.

I’m thinking of doing an Idolm@ster panel at Otakon. Should I submit it?

Chika Chika Idol Crowdfunding Begins

…and I am not so enthusiastic.

If you seen episode 15 about Kirarin Revolution, you heard my spiel on CG anime. Basically how, at the time, it was horrible. 2006 was a it too early to do it. Now we are ten years later and CG in TV anime is more common and better. Are we ready for an all CG anime again?

I have to give some credit, the promotional video is much better looking than ANY episode of Kirarin Revolution Stage-3. The dance portion was only okay and the animation of just them talking was…eh. But you do see effort.

But damn, when they talk it just look like they’re sticking they’re tongue out at you. ADD SOME TEETH!

The story is something to wonder about.

“The story of Chika Chika Idol will follow the everyday lives of Pâtithree, a group of “underground idols.” – ANN

“A strong story could make up for bad animation, but good animation can’t make up for a bad story”, is something I hear. But in a genre like idol anime, which is more about aesthetics, can that saying fit? The plot sounds thin and the style is choppy CG. It’s too early to fully judge it though.

Even if this ends up not being great, I still want to support a new project by a small studio. Chika Chika Idol is addressing a part of the idol culture that didn’t have a show about it yet. For now check out the webcomic, read the ANN article and maybe throw them some cash.

The B.B Explosion of Ancient Manga Podcasting

Between 2007 to 2010 I did an anime podcast called The Otagal. It was a solo project with love. It’s a time capsule, as I mention reading manga Borders and the beginning of Johnny Wander.

The episode is about B.B. Explosion, a manga about the Actors School in Okinawa. It even has Da Pump. What’s interesting is that The Okinawa Actors School and Da Pump are real. This idol manga is also like an advertisement for the school . I haven’t read it in a long time. I just wanted to share this piece of my fandom history with idol related things.

Feel free to make fun of my earliest fandom expression. I really grew when it came to talking about anime and manga. If I find this manga again, I’d like to review it with older eyes.

The Release Schedule

These are the tentative dates for the episode releases! Things may change based on achieving the Patreon goals of 3 episodes of month  (at $75) or 4 episodes a month (at $100) Other factors may be my big cross country move this August and convention season. Another factor would be any new idol show that comes out between now and November 2016 will be added.

Some episodes I put extra weeks between because they will take longer due to the amount of content like Pretty Rhythm, but I will try to lessen that time. Please follow my Twitter @Viga for announcements on any changes.

No, I don’t want to Komugication! I thought we were done with you! We left you in the deep recesses that was last decade! No one remembers Soultaker or even your Nurse Witch Pretty Sammy Sailor Moon Supaaah OVA!

At least the first performance is as cute as it can be. It was a dream…of course. Then this is followed by the straight up, by the book, magical girl first episode. She has a great family, great life, is constantly late for school and a perfect best friend. The added thing is being an idol, but on a smaller scale.

At the halfway point she becomes a magical girl after saving the Luna equivalent and them saving her from a cockroach. Yup. A pivotal decision was made thanks for bugs. There’s a little bit of the spoof bits with the narration describing the transformation, but there isn’t much. The Komugi OVA was a spoof series and a weird one too, so this played by the book maho shojo template is disappointing. Especially so in a world where we’ve seen in transformed, subverted and even done away with.

Apparently this is among other references to Tatsunoko stuff. I’m not sure.

This is why in the blog post How Long Will This Idol Train Last I wrote “Now we have stragglers whipping up less than quality idol anime to get in on trend. I’m looking at you Venus Project.” Now I’m looking at you Komugi. With Tatsunoko jumping on the idol trend with this product, the end is nigh.

Sekko Blog 1

“A Visceral Allegory of Seven Years of My Artistic Life”

The title of this episode made me fall in love with the first episode. I known art students that said that in artist statements. In fact the reason this first episode appeals to me is because of the woes of an art student. Especially one who has to start drawing things they don’t want to.

Usually, this is the case and it consists of models, landscapes, and objects. What kind of art school only has sculptures to draw? What school did she go to? She is Miki Ishimoto, hardened by the art student world and now sees another type of art.

She isn’t wrong in her speech about performance art, even in show business is art. But then she meets the idols she will be managing and she’s in the school of hard knocks!

Of course! You saw this coming from a mile away! “Sekko!” The agency prefers to represent non-humans. The Sekko Boys have profiles “set in stone” and “firm morals.”

Each one fits that certain mold of a male idol or just bishie anime character. Medici would be drawn as the shortest and cutest one, or Hermes would be the one with glasses, if this was a conventional male idol show. Their “chiseled” good looks would take them far.

The real test of this show is: how long until the novelty wears off. The sculpture hating manager and the sculpture idols already seem to run it’s course already. The joke for the series is that fact that they’re “sekko.” Give me more than that, but at least this isn’t a rocky start.

I could have been worse with these puns you know.
